Gamblers Anonymous (GA) is a twelve-step program for problem gamblers. GA began in Los Angeles on September 13, 1957. As of 2005 there were over 1000 GA meetings in the United States and meetings established in the United Kingdom, Spain, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Israel, Kenya, Uganda, Korea and Japan. The only requirement for GA membership is a desire to stop gambling. Aside from financial insecurity, problem gambling has been shown to cause dysfunctional families, legal problems, employment difficulties, psychological distress and higher rates of suicide and attempted suicide. Less than 10% of those with gambling problems seek treatment for the syndrome. GA has auxiliary groups, Gam-Anon and Gam-A-Teen for spouses and children of problem gamblers. Incidence rate and evaluationProblem gambling is estimated to occur in 1.6% of the adult population in the United States. GA has a list of twenty questions that can be used to self-diagnose compulsive gambling. The results from their instrument have correlated strongly with other tests that screen for compulsive gambling (e.g. the Total Sensation Seeking Scale, Boredom Susceptibility, Experience Seeking, South Oaks Gambling Screen, and Disinhibition subscales). GNU Free Documentation License Why does gamblers anonymous have to mention god? Q. Ive come to admit that i have a gambling problem and i went to gamblers anonymous but i was put off by the fact that several of the steps include religious connotations. Im a staunch atheist and i feel there must be a way of fighting this addiction without going all religious. Asked by arabphil78 - Wed Oct 15 18:08:49 2008 - - 5 Answers - 1 Comments A. I agree with you, it is ridiculous. It is a shame if there are no other organizations that can help you without using the crutch of religion. I think for alcoholism they have alternate organizations, but I don't know about gambling. I thought that they mention a "higher power" and not any specific religious reference. Is it possible that you can just lie though the steps (or parts of the steps) that you don't agree with, and be helped from the other steps? Maybe you can interperet the higher power to be science. I'm sure that a lot of what is done has nothing to do with religion, and hopefully they don't make you participate in any type of prayer. If they say a group prayer, maybe you can just stand up along with everyone else but… [cont.] Answered by Alan S - Thu Oct 16 12:53:14 2008 512 billion.... Should Alastair Darling sign up for gamblers anonymous? Q. Even Paul Merson never gambled such huhe amounts... I cannot help, even in my limited knowledge of the world of economics, reading Monsieur Darling's budget precis and hearing the words utter in my head 'ruin', 'the', 'UK' and 'economy'. Also, if you look into his budget carefully, you reallise that all but the poorest working families are not really going to be better off, in the long term at least. With one hand Darling firmly puts a 2.5% drop in VAT in your chest pocket; with the other hand he raches into your wallet for an additional 0.5% in National Insurance. For anyone who has bothered to look into it, do you feel Darling's various 'moves' in the budget are good or bad? One of the most important point about Budgets in general is that they are concerned with both the economic well-being of the country (and as far as it goes to the economic well-being of citizens) but also the political well-being of the party in Government. For example, the 0.5% increase in National Insurance is from April 2011, hence after the next election. If Labour were re-elected then okay, N.I will go up, if the Tories win then they either have to stick to the plans, or scrap them and try and find another way to raise capital. There are some good points in the PBR, I believe that the highest earners should subsidise society to a greater degree than lower earners, to what level is for another question. It sounds like he wants to gamble again and that is why his behavior is like this. He needs to get back to his meetings again. He may be going to the casino and hiding it from you? If he isn't then he behaving like an alcoholic thats on a dry drunk. They are not drinking(gambling) but want it very bad. Try to sit him down calmly and talk to him about what he is feeling. If he doesn't get right here loving him or not you may have to get things together the best you can and end the relationship. Sleeping apart is not good and maybe plan something for the two of you to try and rekindle the romance a bit. It's very hard living with an addict because one moment they are up and the next they are down and they keep you on that roller coaster… [cont.] Answered by Julia - Thu Apr 10 06:34:37 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Gamblers Anonymous" What's Happening - Oct. 15, 2009
